He's a Threat to Peace

Bill: I'm alright. I'm just a little worried about this whole situation with Iraq. I was watching Bush's speech last evening, and I can't believe that we might be going to war in a few days….Well I can believe it, but I can't.

Jeff: Yeah, I don't know, man. Nobody wants a war, but you know this Hussein guy is an evil man. Have you ever seen footage of what he's done to the people of Iraq. I mean he's a psycho. He's a threat to peace.

Bill: That may be so, but that's why we have a war crimes tribunal. Surely there are more just ways to handle this issue. I mean it seemed that the inspections were working. The Iraqi government had begun destroying missiles…

Jeff: Yeah, but who knows what they're hiding. Do you really think Saddam's going to let inspectors gain access to any dangerous weapons? It's clear he's just throwing bones to the U.N. to buy himself time.

Bill: We don't know he has weapons of mass destruction. There's no evidence; it's all speculation.

Jeff: I just think that Bush and the rest of the joint chiefs seem very convinced that Hussein is a menace and I trust that they would pursue conflict only with the best interests of the people in mind.

Bill: There's got to be a better way.

Jeff: Sometimes, you know, with these kinds of situations there is no choice, and just a tough decision has to be made. Hey, at least you can be rest assured that it will be a short conflict.

Bill: I don't know, man.

In this case Bill is talking to one of his co-workers, Jeff, about his concerns over the war. Jeff is in support of the conflict saying that he has faith in the government's decision, and that he feels Saddam is "a threat to peace." This phrase is often used as a reason for going to war with Iraq. The American government feels that Saddam Hussein possesses weapons of mass destruction, and has every intenstion to use them. In this way, Saddam Hussein is a threat to international peace. However, in light of the fact that there seems to be no concrete evidence to support this theory, many people feel that in deciding to go war George Bush is also a threat to international peace. Many of the reasons whether for or against the conflict with Iraq are gathered from popular opinion, and/or news briefs.

ここでは、ビルは同僚のジェフに、戦争に対する懸念について話しています。ジェフは戦争を支持していて、政府の決定を信頼していると、そしてサダムが"a threat to peace（平和に対する脅威）"だと思っているといいます。このフレーズは、イラクと戦争する理由としてよく使われます。アメリカ政府はサダム・フセインが大量破壊兵器を保有し、それらを使う意図があると考えています。このため、サダム・フセインは国際平和に対して脅威だというわけです。しかしながら、この理論の根拠となる具体的な証拠は何もないらしいという事実を考えあわせると、戦争をすることを決めたという点においてジョージ・ブッシュもまた国際平和に対する脅威であると、多くの人々が感じています。イラクとの戦争に賛成か反対か、その根拠の多くは、世論やニュース記事から集めたものです。

ヤツは平和に対する脅威だ

Jeff: おはよう、ビル。調子はどうだい？

Bill: 快調さ。このイラク情勢全般は少し心配だけどね。昨夜ブッシュの演説を見ていたんだけど、２〜３日のうちに戦争に突入するなんて信じられないよ….いや、そうなるんだろうけど、信じられないよ。

Jeff: えー、わかんないな。誰も戦争なんて望んでいないけど、あのフセインって男が悪人だってことは知ってるだろ。ヤツがイラク国民にしてきたことの映像をみたことあるだろ。つまりさ、ヤツは狂人だよ。平和に対する脅威なんだ。

Bill: そうだとしても、だからこそ戦争犯罪裁判所ってものがあるんだろ。きっとこの問題を扱うもっと公正な方法があるはずさ。査察は効果を上げていたように思うんだ。イラク政府はミサイルを壊し始めていたし…

Jeff: ああ、でも、ヤツらが何を隠しているか誰も知らないだろ。サダムが危険な武器に査察団が近づくことを許すツモリだなんて、本当に思ってるの？あれは明らかに、国連にエサを投げて時間を稼いでいるんだよ。

Bill: サダムが大量破壊兵器を持っているとは限らないよ。証拠はないだろ、すべて臆測だよ。

Jeff: ブッシュと統合参謀本部の他のメンバーは、フセインが危険人物だってとても確信しているみたいと思うし、純粋に国民の利益を考えて、戦争しようとしているんだと僕は信じているよ。

Bill: もっと良い方法があるにちがいないよ。

Jeff: ときにはさ、こんな状況で仕方がないこともあるし、困難な決断を下さなくてはいけないんだ。ねえ、少なくとも、戦争が短期間だってことは確かだから安心できるだろ。

Bill: どうかなぁ。
