O Christmas Tree

Mike wants to get rid of his Christmas tree, and so he calls the city's waste removal office to see when the collection date is.

R: Good afternoon, Metro Waste Disposal, Rachel speaking, how may I
help you?

M: Yeah, hi, I'm calling to find out about a collection date.

R: Alright, sir. What are you looking to have picked up?

M: I want to get rid of my Christmas tree, but I'm not sure when to
put it out.

R: Can I have your address, sir?

M: Sure it's 45 Golfdale Road in North York.

R: We're collecting trees along with other regular garbage collection
in your area next Thursday, and if you have any poinsettias or
other holiday plants, we ask that you hold on to them until the
regularly scheduled collection the week after that, which for you would also be Thursday.

M: But they're all plants. Why are they separated?

R: Well, the trees are so big and cumbersome that we're taking them
away with the non-organic garbage collection, and the rest of the
plants can be taken with the organic garbage.

M: I see, so what if my tree is in a pot?

R: Sir?

M: My tree is quite small and came in a pot like a regular plant.
Should I put it out next Thursday or the following Thursday?

R: That's a tough question…I guess you could try putting it out next
Thursday, but if I were you I'd remove the tree from the pot and
put it out next Thursday. Then I'd put the pot and the soil out
the next week with the organic garbage.

M: Wow. That's kind of complicated. Oh well, I guess it's the safest
bet. Thanks.

I'm calling to find out about a collection date.
“find out" は、ここでは「～について調べる、知る、気が付く」という意味。その他に、「～の正体を見破る、人を捜索する」という意味もある。
ex. I'll find out what time the train leaves.
（電車は何時に出発するか調べてみる。）

I want to get rid of my Christmas tree,
“get rid of～" で、「～を片づける、～を取り除く」という意味のイディオム。
ex. Can you please get rid of that old bag?
（あの古い鞄を捨ててくれないか？）

we ask that you hold on to them until the regularly scheduled collection the week after that
この “hold on" は、「持っておく、固定しておく」の意味になる。その他、「電話を切らないでおく」はよく使われるので、覚えておきましょう。 “Hold on, please." 「少々お待ちください」
ex. Please hold on to your tickets.
（チケットを持っていてください。）

if I were you I'd remove the tree from the pot and put it out next Thursday
“if I were you" は、「もし、私があなただったら」という意味。文頭、文末にも使うことができる。
“put out" にはいろいろな意味があるが、ここでは「～を外に出す」になる。
ex. If I were you, I'd spend the money and go overseas.
（私でしたら、お金を使って海外へ行きます。）
Can you put out the rubbish, please?
ゴミを出してくれますか？

R:こんにちわ、メトロ廃棄物処理所のレイチェルです。ご用件を伺います。

M:あの、こんにちわ、収集日についてお聞きしたいことがありまして、
お電話しました。

R:かしこまりました。どのようなものの回収でしょうか?

M:クリスマスツリーを処分したいんですが、いつ出したらいいのか分から
なくて。

R:ご住所を頂けますか?

M:はい、ノースヨーク、ゴルフデイル45番通りです。

R:クリスマスツリーはそちらの地域で次の木曜日、ふつうゴミの収集と一緒
に収集します。また、ポインセチアや他のクリスマスの植物などありました
ら、その次の週の予定されているゴミの収集日、そちらではまた木曜日にな
りますが、その日まで出すのをお待ち頂きたいのですが。

M:でも、すべて植物ですよ。どうして別々にするんですか?

R:はい、クリスマスツリーはとても大きく扱いにくいので、非有機ゴミとして
処理します。そして残りの植物は有機ゴミとして処理しますので。

M:わかりました、それじゃあ、もしツリーが鉢の中に入っていたら?

R:はい?

M:僕のツリーはとても小さいし、鉢に入っているふつうの植物みたいなん
です。それでも次の木曜日かそのまた次の木曜日に出さないとダメですか?

R:それは、難しい質問ですね・・・次の木曜日に出してみても大丈夫だと
思いますが、私でしたら、鉢からツリーを抜いて、次の木曜日に
出します。それから、鉢と土はまた次の週に有機ゴミとして出します。

M:わぉ。なんだか複雑ですね。でも分かりました、それが一番安全な方法
みたいですね。ありがとうございます。
